Heartache as families of 3 pals killed in horror Spain hol crash confirm funeral details with driver still in hospital
THE heartbroken families of three friends who died in a horrific two-vehicle crash in Spain last month will be laid to rest this week.
Michaela Newcombe, her boyfriend Mark McCullagh-Crichton and his sister-in-law Amy McCullagh were killed in the crash near Malaga at around 2:30am on June 28.
Amy’s husband Ian, who was driving the vehicle, remains in a serious condition in Malagas’ Carlos Haya Hospital after the pals’ rental jeep plunged 100 feet into a ravine off the A7 motorway.
The two couples involved in the crash were from Mullingar in Co Westmeath and had flown out on a holiday to the Spanish resort at the end of last week.
Amy worked as a healthcare assistant at Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar.
She has been remembered as a “beloved daughter” who will be “forever missed and remembered” by her husband Ian, daughters Ruby and Kaylee and son Curtis.
Her death notice reads: “Amy will be sadly missed and remembered by her heartbroken parents Padraig and Mary, sisters Lisa and Hannah and brother Zack, her grandmother Mary (Snr), aunts, uncles, cousins and friends and all who knew her.
“Predeceased by her grandparents Patrick and Frances Maguire and Mick Wallace, aunts Brigid Maguire and Mary-Frances Maguire.”
The beloved mum-of-three will repose at Shaws Funeral Home in Mullingar from 5pm until 7pm on Thursday.
Her funeral mass will take place in the Church of the Nativity in Ballynacary at 11am on Friday, with burial afterwards in Sonna cemetery.
The young woman has been remembered as a “friendly girl with a lovely smile” who was “hardworking and dedicated to her job” by mourners.
Michaela was the head receptionist in local beauty salon Havana Sun, who remembered her as a “sunshine lover” and the “kindest, friendliest soul.”
Her death notice said: “Michaela will be forever cherished and missed by her grief-stricken nanny Francie and grandad Eddie.
“Sadly missed by her heartbroken parents Davy and Lisa, her brothers Mickey and Gary and her beloved sister Teigan, her beautiful nephews Ronnie and Oscar, her aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and her wide circle of friends and work colleagues.”
Michaela will be reposing at Gilsenan’s Funeral Home from 3:30pm until 6:30pm tomorrow, with her funeral mass due to take place in the Cathedral of Christ the King in Mullingar at 11am on Thursday.
Mark McCullagh-Crichton has been remembered as a “loving son, brother, uncle and godfather.”
His death notice reads: “Mark will be deeply missed by his heartbroken parents Paula and Albert, his dear brothers Ian, Enda, Kevin, John and Bertie, his sisters Chloe and Jennifer (Jenny), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandniece, grandnephew, extended family, his many friends and his faithful dog Nova.”
The young man will repose at his family home from 4pm until 6pm tomorrow, with the family requesting the house remains private at all other times.
His funeral mass will take place in the Cathedral of Christ the King at 2pm on Thursday, followed by burial in Ballyglass Cemetery.
The families of the tragic friends have requested that any desired donations be made towards the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, a charity that helps Irish families bring the bodies of loved ones who died abroad back home.
An investigation into the crash was launched last month.
