Spine-tingling moment stars belt out ‘incredibly moving’ final song as Glen Hansard’s coffin leaves cathedral at funeral

HUGE stars belted out an “incredibly moving” final song at Glen Hansard’s funeral service.

The funeral for the legendary musician, who died after losing control of his motorbike in Dublin’s Strawberry Beds shortly after playing music in Wren’s Nest pub last Wednesday, took place today at St Patrick’s Cathedral.

The funeral cortege arrived shortly before 1:30pm this afternoon, with the horse driven hearse leading the procession and family members carrying Glen’s wicker coffin into St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin.

The service was jam-packed with Glen’s loved ones’ including his family, friends, industry pals and even some fans.

With the cathedral full, hundreds more gathered outside to watch the proceedings on large screens which had been erected while more than 40,000 watched a livestream of the funeral.

Glen had a huge impact on the music world so it’s no surprise that his funeral was filled with beautiful performances and touching tributes.

The funeral concluded with a rousing rendition of Bob Dylan’s Forever Young, led by Pearl Jam star Eddie Vedder and Hothouse Flowers’ Liam O Maonlai.

Glen had supported Bob Dylan, who was one of his musical heroes, on tour.

Several stars joined the performance including U2’s Bono and Edge, Once co-star Marketa Irglova, Irish singer-songwriters Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Mundy, Paddy Casey, Declan O’Rourke and Rónán Ó Snodaig.

Commitments co-stars Angeline Ball and Bronagh Gallagher, as well as singers Imelda May and Lisa O’Neill also joined the performance, featuring Hansard’s Frames bandmates, with Imelda embracing Liam O Maonlai as he finished playing.

West Side Story star Rachel Zegler, who had performed with Hansard in the States, was also seen singing in the huge final performance.

As the coffin left the church, the song finished but the celebration didn’t.

Paddy Casey and Imelda May kept the music moving with the Auld Triangle, which Hansard regularly performed.

The stars then left the cathedral and a private ceremony took place at Mount Jerome after the public funeral service.

A clip of the final funeral song was shared on social media and Glen’s fans absolutely adored it.

Paul wrote: “Incredibly powerful Liam. Blessings to our beautiful troubadour Glen.”

Claire said: “Beautifully held together by Liam. Safe travels Glen. Thanks for all the music.”

Aideen commented: “Incredibly moving funeral… music was all absolutely amazing.”

Lisa added: “Perfect send off.”
