Shane MacGowan’s father Maurice dies ‘peacefully surrounded by family’ following short illness as funeral plans set
THE father of late Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan has died following a short illness.
A funeral service for Maurice MacGowan is due to take place on Saturday following his death on Monday.

A notice on RIP.ie states that Maurice passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in the care of the staff at University Hospital Limerick.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Therese, and legendary singer son, Shane.
“He will be sadly missed by his loving daughter, Siobhan, son-in-law Anthony, daughter-in-law Victoria, nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends,” the RIP.ie notice states.
His funeral service will take place at the Shannon Crematorium in Co Clare on Saturday.
Following Shane’s death in 2023, Maurice was among the family members who thanked everyone for their outpouring of affection and messages of condolence after his passing.
The family said at the time the tributes had been “beautiful” and helped them all — especially Maurice.
Back in 2018, Shane’s beloved dad and sister Siobhan had to miss his wedding to Victoria Mary Clarke in Denmark as Maurice was recuperating at home under Siobhan’s care.
Shane’s mum Therese, 87, passed away in 2017 when the car she was travelling in crashed into a wall at Ballintoher, Co Tipperary, on New Year’s Day as she returned home from Mass.
