Trucker prevents tragedy by acting on ‘instinct’ & blocking slip-road to stop idiot wrong-way Galway motorway driver

AN IDIOT wrong-way driver’s route was blocked by a brave truck driver in Co Galway earlier this week.

The trucker said he acted on “instinct” to prevent tragedy as the car tried to exit the wrong slip-road on the M18 near Oranmore.

Sharing a clip of the incident on social media, KevDeTrucker said: “Another wrong-way driver on the motorway”.

The clip showed Kev’s truck blocking a slip-road onto the motorway and a white car turning around and heading back in the right direction.

Kev stopped his truck, turned his hazards on and got out to tell the driver to head back in the right direction.
The shocking incident took place at around 3.30am.

It is unclear if the white car had travelled some distance down the motorway or if the driver had attempted a U-turn on the slip-road.

A no U-turn sign is clearly visible in the video, showing that the white car was travelling in the wrong-direction.

Kev told GalwayLive: “The white car in the video came up the motorway the wrong way initially from the Athenry side.

“I had to tell him to turn around.

“After alerting him with flashes, I had to physically get out of the lorry and tell him to turn around and he turned around in front of me and proceeded in the right direction as shown in the video.”

It comes after the nation was rocked by the wrong-way crash on the M9 in Co Kildare.

On August 16, five teenage thugs travelling the wrong-way down the motorway lost their lives when they crashed into another car.

Three sisters, Alma and Niamh Kinsella, Ella Hendricken, and Alma’s seven-year-old son Yemi remain in hospital after their Hyundai was struck by the teenager’s BMW.

Shocking stats released by Transport Infrastructure Ireland showed that there have been 43 incidents of wrong-way motorway driving since 2019, and eight in the last year.

On Tuesday, in the first update since the crash, the innocent sisters’ family thanked the thousands of donations they have received via a GoFundMe set up on their behalf.

They said: “Hi everyone. We wanted to take a moment as a family to say a heartfelt thank you to every single person who has supported Ella, Niamh and Alma.

“The kindness and generosity shown to our family has been truly overwhelming.

“From everyone who has donated, shared the fundraiser, sent messages, kept us in their thoughts or supported us in any way, please know how much it means to all of us.

“Right now, our focus is completely on the girls and being together as a family.

“We aren’t ready to share any further details at this stage, and we really appreciate everyone continuing to respect our privacy.

“What we did want to do was personally acknowledge the incredible support we’ve received.”
