At least 21 killed in horror multi-vehicle crash including 2 minibuses as shocking pics show smashed wreckages

AT least 21 people have been killed after multiple vehicles smashed into each other in South Africa.

Two minibus taxis reportedly crashed head-on, with a third vehicle colliding with them moments later in the Western Cape Province.

Distressing pics of the wreckage show a multi-car pile-up on the main road, with debris and belongings scattered across the tarmac.

Several other passengers were seriously injured in the horror crash, according to the provincial transport department.

Paramedics responding to the scene rushed three of the wounded to hospital for immediate treatment.

The crash happened on the N1 highway between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, around 236 miles east of Cape Town.

Muneera Allie, spokesperson for Western Cape Mobility, said it took place at about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the crash.

Minibus taxis are the main mode of public transport for many people in South Africa and are often involved in fatal collisions.

Road accidents are a major concern in the country, where overcrowding, speeding, fatigue and poor infrastructure contribute to deadly crashes.

The latest tragedy comes after 16 people were killed after a bus driver swerved to avoid a delivery vehicle in 75 miles outside of Cape Town.

An estimated 78 passengers had boarded the service to Idutywa.

When emergency services arrived at the scene, 16 bodies were discovered.

Those injured were transported to the hospital in the town of Worcester.

President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, paid tribute to the victims of the deadly crash.

He said: “The Western Cape incident is a tragic reminder for all of us to exercise the greatest caution on our roads.

“I feel for the families who have lost loved ones in these incidents and I pray for a speedy recovery for the injured persons.”

Authorities have warned motorists to be extremely cautious when driving during the winter period due to fog causing poor visibility.

The roads can become extremely dangerous during this period because of fog, smoke, black ice and poor visibility.
