Roibeárd Woods, a first-year student at Coláiste Íde agus Iosef, enjoyed an incredible weekend when he competed in the ‘Beat the Pros’ competition at the Irish Open

A STUDENT at a Co Limerick school had noteworthy success at the Irish Open by beating three professional golfers.

Roibeárd Woods, a first-year student at Coláiste Íde agus Iosef, enjoyed an incredible weekend when he competed in the ‘Beat the Pros’ competition at the Irish Open in Doonbeg on Saturday.

Roibeárd, who is a member of Tralee Golf Club, has been working hard on his game under the guidance of PGA Professional David Power, and his dedication certainly paid off. In an incredible achievement, Roibeárd defeated three professional golfers: Joe Dean from the UK, Hennie Du Plessis from South Africa and Davis Bryant from the United States.

Speaking about the experience, Roibeárd said that there were more than 2,000 spectators watching the competition. Despite the huge crowd, he remained focused and was not fazed by the occasion.

He also spoke highly of his competitors, describing them as gracious in defeat.

Roibeárd was delighted to shake hands with each of them after the competition.

His impressive victory was followed by a memorable prize presentation, where he was cheered on by the huge crowds. Roibeárd was awarded a round of golf for four people at Trump Doonbeg, valued at €2,000, along with a hat and a set of golf balls.

This is just one of many achievements in Roibeárd’s young golfing career, and he is determined to continue developing his game and building on his success.

Despite his remarkable achievement, Roibeárd remains incredibly humble and was delighted he could stay at the tournament for the rest of the day to watch the action.

He was particularly delighted to watch one of his golfing idols, Shane Lowry, in action as the Offaly man blitzed the field to take the title.
