Ireland is set to phase out free accommodation for Ukrainians under a major new Government proposal that could dramatically reshape the country’s refugee support system.
The plan would introduce stricter limits on State-provided housing and could see newly arriving refugees receive reduced accommodation support compared to previous years. Ministers are also considering new measures aimed at easing pressure on Ireland’s overcrowded accommodation system, which has faced growing strain due to rising numbers and capacity issues nationwide.
Since the war in Ukraine began, Ireland has taken in tens of thousands of refugees, with communities across the country stepping up to provide support. However, the rising cost of housing, shortages in emergency accommodation, and increasing pressure on public services have sparked major political debate over how the system should operate going forward.
The proposed changes are expected to be discussed further by Government in the coming weeks.
