‘Unimaginable tragedy’ – Wexford community rally around family of teen, 16, who died during GAA final with fund gesture
A FUNDRAISER has been launched following the tragic death of “vibrant” teenager Aoibheann Clarke during a GAA final in Co Wexford on Tuesday.
The 16-year-old, from Camcross, was playing for Taghmon-Camross GAA Club when she collapsed on the pitch during a match against Ferns.
People rushed to help the youngster before she was taken to hospital, where she was sadly pronounced dead.
The local community has now rallied to support her family with the costs of her funeral expenses.
The GoFundMe aims to alleviate any financial pressure from Aoibheann’s heartbroken family so that they can grieve without additional worry.
Launching the fundraiser on behalf of her parents, David McEnvoy said: “Aoibheann was a cherished daughter to Carol and Declan, and a deeply loved sister to Aimee and Emma.
“To her family, friends, classmates at Loreto Secondary School, and the entire Wexford sporting community, she was a bright light full of life, quick wit, and incredible character.
“Aoibheann lived and breathed sports, leaving an unforgettable mark on everyone who shared the pitch with her.
“Whether she was playing with pride for Taghmon-Camross LGFA, lining out with All Blacks AFC, or celebrating her recent national title win with the Wexford FC U19 Inter-League team, her talent, determination, and sportsmanship were unmatched.
“She truly passed away doing exactly what she loved most, playing the game she was so passionate about.
“The shock and grief of losing someone so young and full of potential have left a profound void in our community.
“In times of unimaginable tragedy, the people of Wexford and the GAA and soccer communities have always stood shoulder to shoulder.
“Now, it is our turn to wrap our arms around the Clarke family.”
The youngster’s team Wexford FC also shared the fundraiser and called for people to support Aoibheann’s family during “this devastating time”.
The fundraiser has already raised over €28,000 with a target of €30,000.
Aoibheann is reposing at Ryan’s Funeral Home in Wellingtonbridge today between 2pm and 6pm.
Her funeral mass will be held tomorrow at St Garvan’s Church in Caroreigh at 12pm on Monday, with burial afterwards in Kilgarvan cemetery.
