‘You are expected to act as UL ambassador’: Limerick college in email to students

The statement – issued by the interim provost and deputy president, Professor Ann Ledwith – reads as follows

TOP BRASS at the University of Limerick have sent an email statement to the student body following a report of criminal damage in College Court during an after-hours party.

The incident, involving a vacant house in the residential area borddering the university, has made national headlines.

A garda investigation into the incident of criminal damage, which occurred during the early hours of Wednesday, October 7, is ongoing.

Videos of the incident, which have been widely shared on social media show young people throwing a bookshelf through a window, smashing in walls, and jumping off a ground-floor roof onto a mattress.

The statement – issued by the interim provost and deputy president, Professor Ann Ledwith – reads as follows:

“Dear Students, I am very concerned about reports of a recent incident at a property in a nearby housing estate, which An Garda Síochána is actively investigating. As was explained to you in a recent email from our Vice President Global and Community Engagement, Professor Colin Fitzpatrick, all students have a responsibility to abide by the UL Student Code of Conduct and respect the local community that lives in the vicinity of our campus.

“University of Limerick treats all complaints concerning individuals with the utmost seriousness. Procedures for addressing alleged breaches of the Student Code of Conduct are set out in the UL Handbook of Academic Regulations and Procedures: Student Code of Conduct. While the identity of those involved in the incident has yet to be ascertained, let me be very clear – this sort of behaviour is simply unacceptable from any member of our community.

“UL strongly promotes responsible behaviour and positive engagement among students, the vast majority of whom are respectful and valued members of the local community. Acts of anti-social behaviour, including property damage, public disorder and other actions that impact negatively upon local residents, and landlords are a matter of very serious concern. This type of anti-social behaviour not only damages property, but it also damages our reputation and our valued community relationships.

“Let me remind all students at University of Limerick, you are expected to act as an ambassador for UL, both on and off campus, and ensure that your actions reflect positively on our community. Gardaí have launched an appeal for information and can be contacted as per the details below.

  • Contact Henry Street Garda Station on (061) 212 400.
  • Call the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
  • In an emergency, always call 999 or 112.”
