‘Utmost sadness’ as popular Garda & devoted dad-of-8 dies unexpectedly at home and community pay tribute

HEARTBREAKING tributes have been paid to a popular Garda who died “unexpectedly” at his home on Tuesday.
Leitrim native Garda Dermot Bland was stationed in Ballyjamesduff station in Cavan, having previously served in Dublin‘s Store Street and Castleblayney in Monaghan.
Dermot, formerly of Fenagh, Co Leitrim, was a “loving husband and best friend” to his wife Caitríona and a “devoted proud daddy” to his children Eva, Killian, Conor, Kian, Jimmy, Sean, Daniel and Callum.
The dad-of-eight is predeceased by his parents John-Tom and Frances.
A statement on RIP.ie added: “Dermot, unexpectedly at his home on August 11th 2026. Predeceased by his parents John-Tom and Frances.
“Dermot will be forever missed and always loved by his wife and children, brother James, father-in-law Walter (Hughes), sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbours and his many dear friends and his work colleagues in An Garda Siochana.
“In life we loved you dearly, in death we will love you still. In our hearts you will hold a place, no one could ever fill. Rest in Peace Dermot.”
Dermot’s funeral mass is set to take place tomorrow at noon in St Mary’s Church, Ennybegs, with burial afterwards in the New Cemetery in Cullyfad.
A community mass of remembrance was held at Ballyjamesduff Garda Station last night.
In a moving tribute to their late coworker, a spokesperson for An Garda Siochana in Cavan/Monaghan said: “It is with the utmost sadness that we share the notice that serving Garda, Dermot Bland has unexpectedly passed away at his home on 11th August 2026.
“Dermot who was currently serving in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan was formerly of Fenagh, Co Leitrim.
“Ar dhéis Dé go raibh a anam.”
Fenagh St Callins GAA in Leitrim paid tribute to their “former player and lifetime supporter of the club.”
And tributes from loving friends, former colleagues and family have poured in for the tragic Garda.
A former Garda colleague said: “I remember Dermot as a young Guard coming down to Court 44, in his early days in Store Street and always found him to be an exceptionally decent, kind, fair and loyal colleague.”
Another Garda described him as “a witty character that would bring a smile to everyone’s face.”
One mourner said: “I worked with Dermot in Beirnes many years ago. He was an absolute gentleman, always in good humour, full of fun and kind and helpful to everyone.
“There really are no words. Wishing you strength and healing and comfort in the happy memories. Rest in eternal peace Dear Dermot.”
Someone else added: “Dermot, there really are no words to express the profound sadness at hearing of your tragic passing.
“All of my fondest memories of our youth include you in some shape or form.
“A wicked sense of humor, caring and kind. I’ll never forget your dancing! You served your community with fairness and pride.
“You made an impact on all who had the luck of ever crossing your path.”
