Heartache as Irish teen, 18, killed in horrific Iceland car crash alongside two young locals as President pays tribute

AN Irish teenager has died in a horrific car crash near the Icelandic capital of Reykjavík.

The 18-year-old was one of three young people who lost their lives when their car veered off the road at Krýsuvíkurvegur, 29 kilometres south of the capital on Monday.

She has been named as Hannah Jane Large, from Greystones in Co Wicklow.

It is understood she resided in Iceland.

An Icelandic man and woman also died in the incident.

The National Broadcaster of Iceland, RUV, said that police and the Transport Safety Investigation Board are investigating the incident.

The President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, posted on social media that her thoughts were with the young people who died in the crash.

She said: “No words can capture such a loss. When grief strikes in this way, we are reminded of how precious and fragile life is.

“Let us be careful and look out for one another.”

It is the deadliest car accident in Iceland since 2018.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said: “The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of this case and is providing consular assistance.

“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”
