Dad, 56, attacked and killed in ‘violent’ village street brawl as seven men arrested after murder probe launched

A DAD has been killed after he was attacked in a village street brawl with seven people being arrested over the murder probe.

Anthony “Tony” Jones, 56, was found badly injured on Thursday evening after the violence broke out before dying a few days later in hospital.

After the dad, from Brecon, passed away a murder investigation was launched.

The street brawl in Pontnewydd, near Gwent in Wales, also saw a further three men taken to hospital, with two said to be critically injured.

Police raced to the scene at around 7.15pm on Thursday after reports of violent disorder in Mill Street.

A total of seven men,  aged 31, 39, 40, 45, 59, 61, and 73, have since been arrested in connection with the brawl and all remain in police custody.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “Officers investigating a report of violent disorder in Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, on Thursday 6 August, have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 56-year-old man.

“Gwent Police received a report of violent disorder involving a group of men in Mill Street, at around 7.15pm on Thursday 6 August.

“A 56-year-old man – who can now be named as Anthony “Tony” Jones from Brecon – was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and has since sadly died.

“His family are being supported by specialist officers.”

Senior investigating officer, Detective Superintendent Laura Bartley added: “We recognise that reports of this nature will cause concern in our community, but we have officers working around the clock conducting enquiries as part of the investigation.

“We’re trying to establish the movements of those involved both before and after the disorder and are asking motorists who were driving along Hospital Road, Mill Road and the surrounding areas between 6pm and 9pm on Thursday to check their dashcam footage.
