‘Heartbroken family’ of garda sergeant dad-of-five killed in horror Clare crash confirm funeral details as tributes pour

THE “heartbroken family” of a garda sergeant who died in a horror road crash in Co Clare over the weekend have confirmed his funeral details.

Sgt Andrew O’Riordan sadly passed away following a single-vehicle collision on the R466 near Broadford on Sunday evening.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but Sgt O’Riordan was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The beloved dad-of-five, who was based at Mayorstone Garda Station, was reportedly a passenger in the car and off duty when the collision occurred.

The driver, a man in his 50s, was taken to University Hospital Limerick with serious injuries.

Originally from Blarney, Co Cork, Sgt O’Riordan had served with An Garda Siochana in the Limerick area for 28 years.

The family of the late garda have confirmed today that he will repose at St Peter’s Church in Broadford, Co Clare on Thursday from 5pm to 7pm.

Sgt O’Riordan’s funeral mass is set to take place at St Peter’s Church in Broadford at 12pm on Friday.

It will be followed by burial afterwards in the Church grounds.

A notice online said the late garda is “deeply missed by his heartbroken family.”

It added: “It is with deep sadness we announce the death of Andrew O’ Riordan, Hurdlestown Meadows, Broadford, Co. Clare and late of Blarney and Tower Co. Cork on the 26th July 2026.

“Deeply missed by his heartbroken family, loving wife Stéphanie, children Amélie, Steffen, Gabrielle, Jonathan and Axel, parents Patrick and Kathleen, sister Joanne and her husband David Kerr.

“Parents-in-law Jean-Claude Sachet and Marie-France Sachet, brother-in-law Ivan Sachet and his partner Hélena Rigal.

“Nieces and nephews Christopher, Alannah, Charlotte, Matthew, Léïla and Yaëlle, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, work colleagues in Mayorstone and Henry St, Garda Stations, neighbours and his many friends.”

Many heartfelt tributes have poured in for the dad-of-five following his death on Sunday evening.

A mourner said: “Andrew was a leader, a gentleman, a friend and a joy to know. I am privileged having worked with Andrew so closely as he lead me on my early career with him in Mayorstone.

“We had fun days together. He always had a smile, a great wise and witty character and a great family man.

“He will be a loss to all. May Andrew rest in peace. Gone but never forgotten.”

Someone else said: “Andrew was one of life’s gentlemen and always a pleasure to be around.

“I spent many happy times with him as a child and teenager growing up in Tower, he was always full of energy and fun and a great friend.

“My sympathies to his family and all those who knew him. May he rest in peace.”

A third wrote: “I had the pleasure of working with Andrew while stationed in Mayorstone GS back in 2000, an absolute gentleman and kind-hearted soul, my deepest sympathies to his wife, children, his parents and family.”

Anyone who was travelling in the area around the time of the crash is asked to contact Gardai.

They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have camera or dash-cam footage from the area.
