‘Devastated’ baby killer Lucy Letby stayed holed up alone in prison cell for hours after hearing about ‘Doctor A’ death

BABY killer Lucy Letby stayed holed up in her prison cell alone for hours after being told about the death of her doctor friend.

A prison officer broke the news to “devastated” Letby, 36, after seeing The Sun on Sunday’s story last weekend.

It emerged the doctor — who cannot be named — was found collapsed in his car on June 24 this year, the date in 2016 when nurse Letby killed her last victim.

The married 53-year-old — called “Doctor A” in court and described as her “boyfriend” — died in hospital on July 3, the eighth anniversary of Letby’s first arrest.

Last night a source said: “Lucy took the news of the death calmly, but was clearly devastated by it.

“She really went into her shell and was in her cell alone for hours afterwards.

“An official went and told her about it after reading The Sun on Sunday.

“They knew it’d be a trigger for her so were duty-bound to tell her and offer her any support they could.

“But she took it really hard and the coincidence of the anniversaries made it all the more difficult.”

A separate source said Letby — serving a whole life order for murdering seven babies and trying to kill seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital — still hoped to get together with the doctor.

They said of Letby, who is appealing her convictions: “She was infatuated with him and thought the world of him.

“She was slightly delusional, but hoped they’d one day be together.

“But he was a married father of two and did end up giving evidence against Lucy.”

Letby, now being monitored around the clock at HMP Bronzefield, Surrey, denied being “in love” with him.

But she called him “sweetie” in messages and broke down in tears when he entered the dock.

At the Thirlwall Inquiry in 2024, the doctor said he had been tricked into giving her information about babies she had attacked.
