Tragic first picture of ‘lovely’ mum-of-4 who died after being hit by car while walking near Mayo home as tributes pour

TRIBUTES have poured in today for an elderly woman who lost her life after being hit by a car.

Sheila Holian, 81, of Glebe Street, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, died at Mayo University Hospital on Saturday from injuries sustained when she was struck by a vehicle while walking near her home last Thursday afternoon.

She died peacefully surrounded by her loving family in the care of ICU staff.

Locals said the mother of four had a long association with a number of local organisations, including Ballinrobe Golf Club.

Local Councillor Michael Burke, Fine Gael, said the town is both shocked and devastated by the sad loss of one of Ballinrobe’s most popular and best-loved personalities.

He said: “Sheila lived in Glebe Street all her life and was such an integral figure within the town centre and gave so much to the community.

“She will be greatly missed, a woman blessed with so many lovely qualities.

“A shadow of immense sadness has been cast over the town by the tragedy, and my heart goes out to the families impacted.”

Sheila is predeceased by her husband, Pat, by her children, Damien, Anne, Shelly and Edel and extended family.

No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

Road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam footage and were travelling in the area of the N84/Glebe Street, Ballinrobe between 3.50pm and 4.50pm on Thursday, August 20, are asked to make this available to investigating gardai.

Mrs Holian is the 125th person to lose her life on Irish roads this year, a figure which is 12 more than the same period last year.
