Brother fumes vile killer who stabbed Irish ex 50+ times ‘still danger to society’ as he’s released after 40th birthday
AN EVIL killer who stabbed his Irish ex-girlfriend more than 50 times at a Spanish flat is about to be released from jail after serving a 19-year prison sentence.
Alan Daulby, from Liverpool, was expected to be freed on Sunday but well-placed sources said this afternoon it would now happen “today or tomorrow”.
Once released from the UK jail he will be given a Stalking Protection Order and supervised by police.
Stab victim Avril Flanagan’s loved ones said this was a moment they had never wanted to happen and have been dreading.
Her Dublin-based brother David said: “Daulby should have been caged for life.
“Avril was taken from us when she was just 20 and this monster has not long ago turned 40, so he’s got the rest of his life ahead of him.
“He was deemed high risk when he was in jail and has been held as a Category A prisoner.
“I firmly believe he’s still a danger to society and that’s a view I think the prison authorities share.
“Unfortunately there’s nothing anyone can do to keep him behind bars because he’s done his time with the period he spent on remand in jail before his conviction.”
David added: “We understand he will be subject to a police-requested Stalking Protection Order which will mean an officer will be allocated to him, and a travel ban will stop him travelling to Spain, but not Ireland, for the time being.
“We think he’ll be staying in Guildford in Surrey initially, but we’ve also been told he can drop out of the supervision plan at any time if he wants and leave the housing he’s been offered for the first 12 weeks and that makes us very concerned.”
Car valeter Daulby was remanded in prison hours after murdering Avril at his flat in Orihuela Costa near Alicante on May 29 2009.
The Irish woman worked as a barmaid at the pub her parents opened in Orihuela Costa, after leaving Ireland in 2006.
Avril, originally from Swords, Co Dublin, broke up with Daulby around two weeks before he murdered her.
His murder trial heard how he stalked Avril after she ended their year-long relationship and broke her phone SIM card to stop getting calls from him.
He confessed to killing her at the end of the June 2012 trial after more than three years of silence, but falsely claimed he had confused her with an intruder after bingeing on drink and drugs and panicking when he woke up to find her dead.
Judges in the Costa Blanca town of Elche called his stabbing attack on Avril “brutal and barbaric.”
They said in their ruling at the end of the murder trial that Daulby had “taken pleasure in causing Avril additional suffering”.
The court heard he used a mop and bleach to wipe up Avril’s blood after killing her with a kitchen knife, showered and changed clothes.
He wrapped her body in blankets and plastic sheeting and left it under a sofa for her mum Barbara to find.
He was arrested hours later, 125 miles away, after a police chase.
Daulby was transferred to a UK jail from a Spanish prison in a move Avril’s family were kept in the dark about.
Barbara only found out about the transfer through a friend in March 2019.
Despite protests from her relatives, he was released briefly in October 2020 before being recalled less than two months later for breaching his parole conditions.
He has had subsequent release requests turned down since then.
In 2022, Avril’s appalled loved ones ended up stumbling upon a video of Daulby clowning around at an unidentified UK prison.
The shocking footage showed him entertaining other inmates with a mug of tea in his hand in grey tracksuit bottoms pulled up to his knees.
Pale-faced Daulby, sporting an unkempt beard in the first images of him made public since he was pictured being hauled to court nearly 15 years earlier, appeared to try to speak pretend Arabic and fire an imaginary gun.
