Funeral details confirmed for teen, 15, who drowned while swimming in Westmeath lake as school mourns ‘true gentleman’

THE funeral details of a tragic teenage boy who died while swimming in a lake have been confirmed by his family.

Martin Green, 15, from Athlone, was pronounced dead after he was pulled from Lough Ree in the Midlands on Saturday.

The 15-year-old had got into difficulty while out on the water.

His remains were taken from the water near the village of Glasson, Co Westmeath, after a search operation.

Martin’s mum Yvonne shared on social media last night that her “heart is broken”.

She said: “My son my pride and joy my heart is broke over you my baby boy.

“I love you so much, my life will never be the same. Forever 15, my blue eye boy.”

Martin’s funeral will be repose at his family home in Athlone all day on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A Reqiuem Mass will be held in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Coosan on Thursday at 11am followed by burial afterwards in Coosan Cemetery.

Athlone Community College, where Martin was a pupil, opened this morning to provide support for any children impacted by his tragic death.

Cllr Frankie Keena, chair of the school’s board of management, said mourning students and staff were encouraged to come to the school at this time.

The school’s Critical Incident Management Team, along with professional psychological support services from National Educational Psychological Service were at the school to provide support.

Keena said: “[The school is] open to all students, peers, and staff members who wish to access counselling, speak with a professional, or simply gather together to support one another.”

The councillor also shared his deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to Yvonne, Caroline, John, Peter and the extended Quinn and Greene families” after Martin’s death.

Cllr Keena continued: “Martin was a remarkable young man who brought immense life, energy, and joy to the wider community.

“His love for sports and his vibrant personality made him incredibly popular with all his friends and sporting clubs.

“My thoughts, prayers, and full support are with Martin’s family, his many friends, and his school community during this unimaginably difficult time. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”

In a statement, Athlone Community College said: “Martin was a true gentleman who brought joy to those who were fortunate to know him.

“Martin will always be remembered here in Athlone Community College for the way he played football and the way he lived life.

“Tough as they come, he never gave up on a ball and had a hammer of a left foot. Both on and off the pitch in school, he always had a big grin on his face, and his one-liners could brighten anyone’s day.

“He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by everyone who knew him.”
