Former Roscommon GAA player killed in single-vehicle crash laid to rest as tributes pour for ‘true gentleman’
TRIBUTES have poured in for a “true gentleman” who died following a single-vehicle crash in Co Roscommon over the weekend.
Harry Cowley, 60s, sadly passed away after a single-vehicle collision at Carrigans Park, Donamon, Co Roscommon on Sunday morning.
Gardai and emergency services raced to the scene following reports of a collision, involving a car, at Carrigans Park in Donamon.
It is believed the crash took place in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Harry, who was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
The Roscommon native, who is a former GAA player, is well known locally for having won the under-21 All-Ireland Football Championship playing against Kerry in 1978.
Harry’s heartbroken family confirmed his death in a notice over the weekend.
The death notice confirmed that Harry passed away “suddenly,” after the tragic accident on Sunday.
It said: “Harry Cowley, Cargins Park, Donamon, Co Roscommon passed away suddenly on 31 May 2026.
“He will be forever missed by his loving wife Mairéad, sister-in-law Emma, brother-in-law Declan, aunt Bridie Dwyer, Michael, cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends.
“He is predeceased by his beloved parents Jack and Maureen.”
Harry’s funeral mass took place yesterday at St Patrick’s Church, Clooneycolgan, with burial afterwards in Oran Cemetery.
And tributes have poured in for the beloved former GAA player as news of the tragedy continues to shock the local community.
One mourner said: “Very sorry to hear of the passing of Harry.
“He was a true gentleman and a pleasure to play camogie under. Deepest Sympathies to the Crowley family.”
Someone else added: “Such a shock to learn of Harry’s untimely passing.
“He was a true GAA, Oran and Rossie man to the core, we did enjoy his absolute class on the field of play where he shone, big strong man but clean as a whistle in play no matter how tight the game would be.”
