THE brother of an Irish sport’s star has been shot dead in a “targeted assassination” in Spain, sources have confirmed.

The man, aged in his 30s, was killed on Carrer de Balmes in Barcelona at 10am on Wednesday morning.

Cops are reported to be treating the attack as a “targeted assassination” linked to organised crime, according to Barcelona’s mayor.

The horror shooting took place as the Spanish city hosted Pope Leo XIV for his Apostolic Journey.

The historic trip has put the whole city on lockdown – sparking a huge police presence with over 6,000 officers and many road closures.

A large police tent was set up where the alleged assault unfolded on Carrer de Balmes.

Local cops have launched a probe into the shooting.

A manhunt has been launched but police are yet to locate the suspect.

However, local authorities have found the suspected murder weapon.

Bullets inside a magazine were discovered at a bus stop in Plaça de Galla Placídia, reports say.

There was also a bicycle helmet which the attacker reportedly wore at one point.

Local cops have released a CCTV image of the suspected gunman.

In the picture, he appears to be wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt and shorts, and is seemingly holding the gun and bicycle helmet that police later recovered.

Barcelona‘s mayor ​​Jaume Collboni said organised crime was linked to the latest shooting – the third in weeks.

On Sunday night, another man died after being gunned down in Barcelona.

The shooting, which unfolded at 9pm local time on Carrer de la Mineria, in the Zona Franca, is still being investigated by police.

In May, another shooting on the same street left another person dead.

Six men have been killed in shootings in Catalonia this year so far.

Spanish police said they would not comment on a live investigation.
