Tragic first pic of ‘popular’ woman, 70s, who died after being struck by car while walking in Roscommon as tributes pour

TRIBUTES have poured in for a “popular” woman who died after she was struck by a car in Roscommon on Sunday.
Marian Keegan, 70s, was walking on St Patrick’s Street in Castlerea at around 7:20pm when the horrific collision took place.
Gardai and emergency services rushed to attend the incident but Marian was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
A death notice said she will be “sadly missed” by her brother Sean, sister-in-law Anne, niece Shauna, nephews Shane, Jamie, Kevin and Joseph, uncles Johnny and Jimmy McGrath, aunt Kathleen, cousins, relatives, neighbours and “many friends”.
Marian has been described as a very popular lady in the Castlerea area.
Paying tribute, local Fianna Fail Councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice said: “It was very sad news to hear that a local lady was knocked down and died as a result of her injuries.
“She was a very popular local lady and I want to extend my sincere sympathy to her brother and other relatives on this very sad occasion.”
It is understood Marian previously worked as a nurse, with a former colleague saying she was “a beautiful kind and caring lady”.
Another mourner wrote: “So sad to hear that Marian has passed. She was a lovely lady and always so stylish.”
A third said: “Marian you were a lady, that we had the pleasure to know, and we will miss you, and all our chats.”
Marian’s remains will repose at Gaynor’s Funeral Home in Castlerea from 5pm until 7.30pm on Wednesday.
Her funeral mass will take place at St Patrick’s Church at 11am on Thursday, followed by burial afterwards in St Joseph’s Cemetery.
Gardai have launched an investigation into the fatal collision and urged anyone who may be able to assist in the probe to come forward.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.
“Any road users who were travelling in the area of St Patrick’s Street, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, between 6.45pm and 7.45pm on Sunday 11th October 2026, and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), are asked to make it available to Gardai.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Castlerea Garda Station on (094) 9621630, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
Marian is the 147th person to lose her life on Irish roads this year, a figure which represents 11 more than the same period as last year.
