Elderly man, 87, beaten to a pulp ‘by fellow care home resident’ as shocking pics show pensioner’s horrific injuries

A DEMENTIA patient has been left hospitalised after he was beaten to a pulp by a fellow care home resident.

John, 87, who lives at HammondCare’s Hammondville home in south-west Sydney, was allegedly assaulted on Wednesday night.

The attack was so vicious it left the pensioner looking unrecognisable with horrific injuries.

Graphic hospital images show the pensioner drenched in blood and covered in bruises.

Both of his eyes are swollen shut with severe trauma across his face and head, and a neck brace supporting him as blood is seen leaking from his ear onto a pillow.

He was allegedly discovered badly injured and covered in blood on the veranda outside his cottage inside the facility’s secure dementia unit following the incident.

His daughter Margaret, who lives in Spain, said the family has been left devastated and in complete disbelief at what has happened.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before. I’ve never seen anybody this beat up,” she said on 2GB.

She revealed the moment the family were first contacted, saying her mother received a call from night staff at 9:31pm telling them John had been hurt and needed hospital treatment.

Margaret added: “They wanted to send him to the hospital and told Mum, no need to come, we’re just going to put him in the ambulance.

“My mother, who’s 85, insisted that they wait until she arrived at HammondCare at Hammondville to join my father in the ambulance.”

Disturbed by what she was hearing, Margaret said she immediately phoned the facility seeking answers about what had happened to her father.

She explained: “It was the night nurse that took my phone call, and I asked what had happened to my father.

“He said that the changeover of day staff to night staff told him that they had tried to put Dad to bed four times.

“Of course, it infuriated me. That was not my question. I asked what happened to my father.

“He said that he was found on the veranda outside of his cottage, bloodied up, as you can see by those photos.

“They wanted to send him to the hospital and told Mum, no need to come, we’re just going to put him in the ambulance.

“My mother, who’s 85, insisted that they wait until she arrived at HammondCare at Hammondville to join my father in the ambulance.”

The incident has left the family demanding answers as the elderly man remains in hospital recovering from his devastating injuries.

HammondCare says an investigation is now underway to determine how John was assaulted without anyone hearing or seeing anything.

Executive General Manager Jenny Summerton said: “We are extremely sorry and deeply saddened that this has occurred.

“Police were notified immediately of the assault and the family were also informed.”
